Artist statement

The ceramics and drawings I create mainly focus on the human body more specifically the head and face and how they can be manipulated or exaggerated to create striking, interesting, and often humorous pieces. My main inspiration comes from cartoons and caricatures specifically from mad magazines and is clear in my hand-building and especially in my drawings, featuring lots of caricatures and weird faces. Using these exaggerated human features mixed with weird forms and combinations allows me to make strange stylized creatures with my hand-building, inspired largely by Primus album covers and artist Zhenna Martin. Another huge influence on my work is music, which I'm almost always listening to when I make art. The wide range of genres and artists I listen to gives me all kinds of aesthetics and feelings to draw from.

When I create a piece my goal isn't always to have a seriously deep, or thought provoking meaning, while that can come about during the process, my goal is to create striking pieces that will stick with the viewer through the use of comedy and a unique style which in ceramics is not often seen. In the end my goal is for my art to be striking, memorable, and funny more than to have a serious deep meaning, because a piece can have a great well thought through meaning behind it but without a good visual adaptation the piece is easily forgotten which many artists seem to forget.
